What can I say, I love sailors (& blooming lucky too – after all, I have one tattooed on my thigh!) Whenever I’m asked to sum up my personal style, you can bet that sailor style ranks pretty darn high.
I feel rather lucky actually, that I know what I like. Every now and then (emphasis on the now) I become so overwhelmed by all of the wonderful clothes out there that I can’t remember what I do and don’t like. It’s times like these where I head straight to the sailor section of my closet (yes, I have a dedicated section) and all is right in the world again. What can I say, I just ♥ sailors.
After living in a CBD for almost two years now, I genuinely get really excited whenever I stumble across a really cute residential street. It’s funny how things change, as when I was living in a very Stepford wives area in Christchurch, I was desperate to claw my way out. I guess that’s how it always goes – the grass is greener, yada, yada..
I channelled my inner housewife and dressed in my finest florals – this rose print dress by Chicwish. This is the first year ever that I feel like I’ve well and truly been bitten by the Spring bug. Sure, that annual jealously towards Autumn in the northern hemisphere is still there, but hey, flowers! I’ve been embracing my inner spring self and gravitating towards florals and pastels – which is proving to be very fun indeed! All topped off with a vintage beret, the perfect outfit for grabbing a cheeky hot chocolate – which is exactly what we did next!
Boo! Happy, happy Halloween! It’s not really celebrated here in New Zealand (which genuinely makes me so sad!) but hey, I know I’ll be all dolled up in my ASOS bat jumper and eating as much candy as I possibly can. Oh, and watching my all-time favourite, Hocus Pocus on repeat! “I put a spell on you and now you’re mine!” Enjoy, guys! ♥
Is the cat obsession still going? OH, YOU KNOW IT IS! As long as my beloved Pepa Loves keeps creating dresses as sweet as this one, you just know I’m gonna be crazy about feline fashion. Just look at that print! And a pan collar too? Come on guys, you can’t expect me to have any willpower, right?
I had the purr-fect location in mind for shooting this little number, but when it didn’t work out we had to switch to other options. Just based off the fact that there is a giant Wille E. Coyote graffitied on the wall shows that sometimes makeshift locations turn out way, way better than what you planned. Sometimes it’s best to just roll with it, because honestly, what’s better than a giant Loony Toon plastered on a wall? (Answer: two!)
“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.“
- Alice in Wonderland.
I really, really love the story of Alice in Wonderland. The whole idea of tumbling down a rabbit hole into an upside-down world of talking flowers and size-altering biscuits sounds incredible. Naturally, I love it when any of my outfits even mildly remind me of my favourite old stories, let alone Alice (if you read Lost in the Haze during my first days of blogging you might remember my Red Riding Hood or Cinderella posts). It really doesn’t take much to want to dress up like a book character. After all, my mother was a librarian, so what can I say – it’s in the family!
The start of spring didn’t quite have in mind what I thought it would.. I ride past the gardens almost daily on the bus, and it looks as though they are bursting with blossoms. But once we ventured inside it was hard to find any form of flower. Not that it really mattered; tip-toeing through overgrown paths in such a delicately embroidered dress (by Chicwish) made me feel just like Alice. Well, gazing down at the white rabbit & Alice rings I was wearing probably helped too! ; )
Have you ever seen trees this colour before? I certainly hadn’t! Every day on my way to work, I would pass this tree as I rode the bus. It’s a weird feeling; looking at something so many times, but never actually standing right in front of it. After weeks and weeks of watching this tree bloom and slowly begin to decay, I couldn’t take it anymore. Arming myself with my trusty Nikon camera and “a ticket for two please” I was soon on my way to sharing this special place with my love. And it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Slap bang in the middle of winter, the skies decided to treat us to… warm weather! You wouldn’t believe the wonders it did for our moods! Keeping with my ‘fruit fashion’ obsession I dressed in this pin-up inspired cherry print dress by Chicwish. I kept accessories to a minimum; instead choosing to focus on wearing bright red lipstick - my favourite! Now, as I bus past this tree, I smile to myself. It makes me think of an afternoon spent with my guy, laughing and pulling silly faces for the camera. ♥
Have you ever wanted to learn how to style a hair bow. It is ridiculously easy, I promise. And such a fun change from a ponytail, don’t you think? I’ve had a little bit of an obsession with hair bows since Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ days (which feels like quite a long time ago now!) Finally I’ve learnt the tricks and have figured out how to do them myself. There is no going back now! ; )
P.s. Yes, you might have seen that I posted this a couple of months ago over on Here Comes the Sun. Sadly, HCTS has stopped blogging for the meantime (we miss you Amanda!) so I figured I’d share it over here too. Enjoy! xo
1. Begin by brushing all of the tangles from your hair, and tying it up into a ponytail on the very centre of your head.
2. Use your hair tie to to put your hair into a loose ponytail style bun. You’ll be left with a large amount of hair sticking out the front, which is fine. This will be the centre piece of your hair bow : )
3. Divide the bun area into two, trying to make them as even as possible. When they’re the size you’re after, use a bobby pin to secure them to the top of your head.
4. Finish the look by wrapping the loose hair over the middle of the bow. Tuck it into the elastic band as much as you can, and fix any messy bits with a good ol’ bobby pin.
And there you have it! As easy as pie, don’t you think? My hair is relatively good at keeping it’s shape, but don’t hesitate to add a little hair spray if you need it. Oh.. and of course – good luck! xo
Today I decided to style three different looks. Can you spot the similarities? All feature a collar, a different coloured lipstick, and the most noticeable of all – glasses!
After battling a bit of an eye infection I’ve been ordered to wear glasses only for the next two weeks. Are there any other contact lens wearers out there? It is a weird, weird transition to wearing glasses when you generally wear contacts all of the time. I was feeling a bit doom-and-gloom over having to wear glasses.. so I decided to style a few outfits to get myself inspired! Here are three looks I’ve dreamed up; all of them featuring coloured lips, collars, and no contacts at all!
Since dying my hair dark I’ve entered the inevitable stage where I experiment with fashion and break away from my usual clothing choices. New hair colour equals exploring new realms of the personal style world, wouldn’t you say? I’ve already mentioned my recent love of the colour green, and now I seem to have become obsessed with all things black and white – like this Motel Rocks dress. Colour is an intensely fun part of fashion to play around with, and I’ve never been one to shy away from it, but now minimalism is looking pretty darn appealing too. Plus, it makes the little things – like these boots – stand out even better. With the perfect black and white ‘no parking’ sign written in an amazing cursive font – I felt like I was channelling typography blogger queen, Nubby Twiglet. She’s pretty rad though, so this is definitely something I can deal with.
It’s September, so you know what that means… Spring is here!! (Well, in the southern hemisphere at least..!) You’ll know by now that I’m not much of a Winter gal. Every year I go slightly into denial – wearing shorts and skirts and laughing (aka shivering) in the face of sub-zero weather.
The entire duration of the colder months, I’ve been left thinking about Spring. Naturally, I couldn’t help but begin to collect pretty things to style for when the weather warms up. The first being this stripy hat! Something about being a brunette makes me want to wear green all the time and these stripes make me feel like a wannabe Parisian. Something I am more than happy to deal with.
I’m beyond excited to get into curling my hair more often this spring! We took a whirlwind trip to Christchurch at the weekend to see family and to collect a portion of our copious amounts of stuff. One of the things I was most eager to find was my curling iron! You’re bound to see a whooole lot more wavy hair around here. Something about it seems so very spring-y, don’t you think?
These spotted clogs had me at hello! Once again, the very wonderful Lotta From Stockholm has outdone herself with her gorgeous designs. Clogs win me over every time – and the polkadot print is beyond dreamy. I’m so so so excited for the weather to finally warm up, so I can wear these babies out, without my toes feeling like they could drop off my feet.
