Hair Styles for growing out a fringe

The ‘Bettie Page’

Has anyone ever told you just how frustrating it is to have to grow out a fringe? Sure, I’ve done it many times before, but all I ever remember is “yay, fringe” or “yay, no fringe!” Somehow I had just plum forgotten about that annoying inbetween-y length when you’re forever brushing your hair out of your eyes. So if you hadn’t worked it out yet, I’m growin’ mine out. And I’m frustrated. Like 90% of the internet, when I feel frustrated I turn to Pinterest for inspiration. And I got it. And I made a board dedicated to it – as well as other beautiful hair. May I present my findings; these are three of my favourite hair styles for growing out a fringe!

Slam-Dunkin-1

Oh sure, you might be getting slightly sick of those “this is what I got for Christmas” type ramblings, but I just can’t help it – I received so many amazing presents this year! I unknowingly fell in love with the UK brand Pop Boutique last year when I was asked to choose something to style by Modcloth. In typical Jo fashion, I opted for this sailor dress in navy blue, which I wore on the blog here. Fast forward to Christmas 2013! I’m unwrapping my presents.. when BAM! This amazing Slam Dunkin’sweater appears in front of me. I noticed immediately that it was Pop Boutique. And so the love affair began…

I’ve been wearing it pretty consistently since Christmas. Sure, it’s summer in New Zealand, but luckily (for me!) it has been freezing lately – making it the ultimate sweater weather (hooray!) I’ve been sticking to mostly red, white, and black shades while wearing this top, as I’m sure you can see here. It may look slightly Christmassy, but hey, Christmas is wonderful, so I have no problem with looking a little festive no matter the time of year!

Pocketful-of-Sunshine-1

…Because it is SO much fun to start the new year off with a bright burst of colour, here you go! Yellow is my favourite colour in the whole world (closely followed by pink!) and genuinely makes me really happy. You wouldn’t believe how excited I was when my parents presented me with this beautiful pastel yellow Instax Mini 8 for Christmas. I’ve been obsessed with Polaroid cameras for years, so am ecstatic to finally have one of my very own. Plus, I am impressed that I had enough willpower to resist choosing pink – I don’t think my guy, Barnaby would have been quite as happy to be carting around a pink camera.

In other news, I hope you all had a terrific new year celebration! Myself and Barnaby had all kinds of wild plans; we wanted to spend our day in the sun drinking cider, slowly getting more and more rosy-cheeked.. Well, that was the plan! Instead, we ended up cosying up at home with mango cider (gotta get that cider in there somewhere), celebrating the midnight countdown with a smooch in a stairwell, and finally, staying up until 3am watching The Office. If you ask me, it sounds like the perfect start to the new year.

2013-a-year-in-review-1

Bam! And just like that, another year is over and done with. I’ve been completely shocked as to how fast 2013 has gone, though I have enjoyed it every step of the way! I always love a good ol’ recap post, and hopefully you enjoy this one too!

All the way back in February I shared one of my favourite outfits I’ve worn this year – this anchor dress by Pepa Loves. I had such a lot of fun shooting this post – dressed like a sailor, hangin’ out with ducks… What more do I need! So all up, I still love this post and it remains a favourite.. Even though it was a whopping ten months ago!

The biggest change for me this year was moving cities! After eight years of living in Christchurch, Barnaby and I decided to take the plunge and begin a new life in Wellington. There were heaps of reasons that lead to this change (high rent prices and earthquakes to name a few!) and I honestly couldn’t be happier with our decision. I get to see the ocean every single day, hot chocolates (and good ones too!) are on every corner, and best of all… I get to experience a city again! Oh Wellington, I really do love you so much!

I was  so excited that the Christchurch Gondola reopened just before we left (it was shut for a couple of years for quake repairs). Both Barnaby and I remember riding it as children, so it was a real treat (and the perfect goodbye to Christchurch!) to take our first ever ride together. And of course the views were spectacular. New Zealand, you definitely didn’t disappoint!

Within a month of us landing in Wellington, we are asked to attend Wellington Fashion Week! It was actually my first ever fashion show! It was surreal, to say the least, but I had such a wonderful time, and LOVED being all dressed up. I even got to shoot a wee bit of street style on behalf of Boohoo!

This year I also took the plunge and dyed my hair dark! I have oodles of hair, and to redye it blonde costs me over $250! After deciding it was time for a change (and I really wanted the extra cash to save up for a holiday!) I became a brunette. I love it, and boy is it cheap to maintain. Yep, I’m happy, all right!

Lost in the Haze also ended up getting a bunch of magazine features this year! The most exciting for me was getting an eight (yes, eight!) page article and cover (!!) of Artful Blogging Magazine. I had no idea that my ol’ mug would be on the cover. I literally squealed as I unwrapped it!

A really exciting part of 2013 was when I befriended a wild seal cub living on the waterfront! Well, I’d hardly call us friends, though I did say a big ‘hello!’ whenever I walked past him. He lived on the waterfront for about two months, and I still miss him to bits! Please come back soon, baby seal!

This year I also made a whole bunch of posts I am really proud of! Some of my favourites of 2013 are:

How to do 1960s Makeup

I am so excited for 2014! I have so many plans, including lots of travel, decorating my home, and enjoying lots of sweet sweet time with my guy, Barnaby. I’m so thankful for all of my wonderful readers and can’t wait to keep sharing posts with you in the next year. Here’s to a fantastic 2014! xo.

How-to-Style-a-Hair-Bow-1

Have you ever wanted to learn how to style a hair bow. It is ridiculously easy, I promise. And such a fun change from a ponytail, don’t you think? I’ve had a little bit of an obsession with hair bows since Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ days (which feels like quite a long time ago now!) Finally I’ve learnt the tricks and have figured out how to do them myself. There is no going back now! ; )

P.s. Yes, you might have seen that I posted this a couple of months ago over on Here Comes the Sun. Sadly, HCTS has stopped blogging for the meantime (we miss you Amanda!) so I figured I’d share it over here too. Enjoy! xo

How-to-Style-a-Hair-Bow-2

1. Begin by brushing all of the tangles from your hair, and tying it up into a ponytail on the very centre of your head.

How-to-Style-a-Hair-Bow-3

2. Use your hair tie to to put your hair into a loose ponytail style bun. You’ll be left with a large amount of hair sticking out the front, which is fine. This will be the centre piece of your hair bow : )

How-to-Style-a-Hair-Bow-4

3. Divide the bun area into two, trying to make them as even as possible. When they’re the size you’re after, use a bobby pin to secure them to the top of your head.

How-to-Style-a-Hair-Bow-5

4. Finish the look by wrapping the loose hair over the middle of the bow. Tuck it into the elastic band as much as you can, and fix any messy bits with a good ol’ bobby pin.

How-to-Style-a-Hair-Bow-6

And there you have it! As easy as pie, don’t you think? My hair is relatively good at keeping it’s shape, but don’t hesitate to add a little hair spray if you need it. Oh.. and of course – good luck! xo

A-bow-for-each-day-1

If you’ve been reading this blog since the very beginning, you might remember this ‘Braid for Each Day‘ post. I dreamt up seven different hair styles based around one theme, so you could wear them every single day of the week. Even now, two years later, it is still one of my most popular posts – so why not continue something that is so fun to dream up and that you clearly love too!

Not too long ago, I had a massive (seriously!) browse through the ASOS sale section. It was here that I discovered the bow of my dreams. When it’s not attached to my head, this bow has been hanging on my lounge wall – it is just so pretty that I want to see it every single day! What can I say – velvet and gold tick all of my boxes.

Rockstar-1

I don’t know whether it’s the dark hair, smoky eye make-up, or the leather jacket, but I’m feeling a whooole lot more ‘Jo Jett’ (as opposed to regular ol’ Jo Fletcher!) today. We all know it’s the jacket, right? Much like one of my very favourite bloggers, Carrie, I used to be absolutely besotted with My Chemical Romance (and still am a bit, really!) You never quite know when your emo-esque side is going to make an appearance, and for me all it took was the tiniest bit of leather. Paired with a pinch of bright colour – you know.. let’s not get too emo here! – and the dreamiest gold flats by Seychelles, I’m pretty sure I’ve got this whole ‘rocker’ thing down pat. ; )

From-the-tips-of-my-toes-1

First up: oh my gosh, my shoes have great big hearts on them!! Okay, so wearing your heart on your sleeve means that you can’t hide your love for someone.. What do you suppose wearing hearts on your toes possibly means? I’m showing my true feelings about pedicures? Hm.. who knows! Good thing that having an actual reason for wearing silly(ish) clothing isn’t mandatory, eh! Anyway, the Mel pumps are from Surfdome and there are more similar here.

I’ve been having massive cravings for parks lately. Yes, parks. After spending the last seven years in Christchurch – known in New Zealand as ‘the garden city’ – every now and then all I want to do is just hang around with a bunch of trees. Yep. Luckily there is this teeny tiny little patch of grass, trees, and path hidden away behind a carpark near my home. Phew, I can breathe easy again! ; )

Ocean-Blues-1

We woke up early on Sunday morning (6:30am to be precise!) After a quick shower, followed by general mucking-about-and-getting-ready, myself and my boyfriend, Barnaby, felt like it could be the perfect time to snap some ocean-side shots. Naturally, I popped on a nautical themed seagull-print dress. I barely mention it here, but the ocean is my absolute favourite part of living in Wellington. It’s full of sculptures and amazing old cranes – like the one I’m standing next to. The view is amazing, even on gloomy days! It’s the kind of view that New Zealand is famous for, and I love it! I try to spend as much time as possible next to the ocean, I love it so much. It’s the best place to get a gellato too. In fact, I think I might need to nip down to the waterfront right now to get one..!
